The Irish Raptor Research Centre is a scientifically managed sanctuary for Birds of Prey and Owls. This 27-hectare sanctuary is home to about 350 birds and animals, with a total of 75 species.
It was established in 1999 and originally set up for the purpose of research only but as interest and awareness grew in the local area, it was decided in 2003 that it would open sections of this centre to visitors. This is proved extremely popular with visitor numbers growing hugely every year.
The main attraction is obviously the Bird Show. During this, the Eagles, Hawks, Falcons, Vultures and Owls swoop and swish past you, often landing right next to you. Some of the birds you are even allow to touch (given the trainers permission beforehand). You might even be lucky even to have one of these magnificent birds land on your bare hand!
Throughout the show, there will be scientists there explaining how these birds live and how important they are to nature. Although some may find the act of these birds preying a cruel act, it is actually vital for our future. They select the weak and infected animals, stopping the spread of diseases and ensure that only the surviving strong individuals remain, producing healthy offspring. Fascinatingly, they assist with mother nature’s overall food chain and evolution.
If birds do not excite you, not to worry you will certainly find an animal to delight in, in the Touch-Zoo. There are goats, lambs, donkeys, horses, guinea pigs, rabbits, hedgehogs, ferrets, different pigs, raccoon, chinchillas and many more.
