The Gaelic name Cnoc na Ri means “Hill of Kings” alludes to the myth the ancient kings of the province were crowned here. Knocknarea remains one of the most striking landmarks in Sligo dominating the skyline over the Coolera peninsula.

At the very summit the huge, flat topped cairn is believed to be the final resting place of Queen Maeve of Connacht.

For walking or hiking enthusiasts, a trip to Knocknarea is a must. On a clear day you will experience some amazing panoramic views of Sligo’s mountains, rivers, lakes and forests; across to Strandhill village; and the wild Atlantic coastline Ireland is famous for.

The climb to the summit is most rewarding. It begins from the car park at the base of the mountain and the entire hike is 2 ½km, taking around 40 minutes each way. The hike is a moderate climb with the terrain getting progressively steeper the closer you get to the top. It’s recommended to go at sunrise or sunset to get some amazing views – you will also need to bring plenty of water and good footwear.

Knocknarea is 15 minute car journey from Clayton Hotel Sligo and parking is available at the start of the trail. When the weather is good, it’s the perfect activity on your trip to Sligo.
